2014 started in the red for the first time since 2008, as the S&P, DOW and Nasdaq all closed down over .80%. Should we worry? I don't think so yet. Here's some data from the WSJ:

December 31st, 2013 Watch List
I want to wish everyone a safe, healthy and Happy New Year!
With that being said, we head into the last trading session of 2013 with the DOW at record territory and the SPY just a stone's throw away. Expect a low volume day today, and I quite honestly think they should make December 31st a half-day session.
December 30th, 2013 Watch List
The market finished flat to red on Friday, with the VIX rising 1%. All the talk was about TWTR finally falling off a cliff after an analyst downgrade, which provided a reason for folks to lock some profits in. TWTR is down pre-market again along with FB, which has broken below the $55 level.
Maybe a somewhat boring last two sessions to end the year, so expect low volume.
December 27th, 2013 Watch List
The market continued its ramp into the end of 2013, with the SPY closing at another all-time high of 183.85. The VIX has shed 10.59% this week and broke below 12 yesterday before moving back above that level into the close. I would love to see a little red today heading into the weekend and into the last two sessions of 2013.
