The nonfarm payrolls rose 151,000 in January following a downward revision to 262,000 in December from 292,000 and an upward revision to 280,000 from 252,000 in November. The January payroll gain fell short of the 221,000 average for last year. The unemployment rate dropped to 4.9% from 5.0% previously. Private payrolls were up 158,000, as the goods producing sector added 40,000 jobs, with construction up 18,000 and manufacturing up 29,000. Jobs in the service sector rose 118,000. Average hourly earnings climbed 0.5% from unchanged previously while the workweek increased to 34.6 hours from 34.5 hours.
